One Curious Thing

Before the webcam had a name, one was watching a coffee pot.

The Trojan Room coffee pot — Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge

In 1991, researchers at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory shared one filter coffee machine. To save colleagues a wasted walk, they pointed a camera at it and sent a small image of the pot across the lab’s network. Later the picture was put on the World Wide Web — and people around the world started checking a coffee pot in Cambridge.

Why it’s interesting

Why it’s interesting

One of the founding images of the live, networked camera was not surveillance or broadcast. It was a very human question: is there any coffee left?

The longer version

A video frame grabber captured an image of the pot so people elsewhere in the building could see whether it was worth the trip. When web browsers learned to show images, the feed moved to the Web and became one of its first famous sights.

The camera was finally switched off in August 2001, after the laboratory moved to a new building.
