Ribose and glucose found in Bennu dust.

Sugars in Bennu — Asteroid Bennu

On December 2, 2025, a peer‑reviewed analysis of OSIRIS‑REx sample OREX‑800107‑108 reported two familiar sugars—ribose and glucose—along with four related sugars in dust from asteroid Bennu. Earlier studies of the same haul had found all five DNA/RNA letters and phosphates. Together they outline a fuller prebiotic toolkit that carbon‑rich asteroids can carry to young worlds.

Why it’s interesting

Why it’s interesting

One rock now holds sugars, nucleobases, and phosphates—the same three pieces that make up nucleotides on Earth. It tightens the link between space chemistry and the raw stock for genetic polymers, without leaping to life.

The longer version

In a Nature Geoscience study posted online December 2, 2025, researchers analyzed a milligram‑scale Bennu grain (OSIRIS‑REx sample OREX‑800107‑108) and detected six simple sugars: the five‑carbon ribose, lyxose, xylose and arabinose, and the six‑carbon glucose and galactose. This builds on earlier Bennu findings that identified all five canonical nucleobases and phosphate minerals in returned material.

To guard against contamination, the team ran procedural blanks and cross‑checked results using alternative GC–MS setups. Low abundances prevented isotopic or handedness measurements, but the detections themselves were reported as robust. Together with prior reports of nucleobases and phosphates, the sugars expand Bennu’s inventory of ingredients relevant to early prebiotic chemistry.
